Farm Blog - Summer fast approaching, Plants on sale, Haskaps ready

Hello from the gardens, What lovely days and lovely nights. So great to be able to keep the windows open, sit outside at night and feel like we are moving into a lovely summer. Well next week officially but have to say feeling relieved to see this weather.

We picked the first of the garlic scapes today and even got our first taste of some Haskap berries. We will be offering U pick for this week during market times.

The Cedar Waxwing birds especially like these berries and spotting these birds are a sure sign that they're nearing ripeness!

Appearance: Haskap berries are typically dark blue or purple in color and have a shape that is similar to a small, elongated blueberry.
Taste: The flavor is often described as a mix of blueberry, raspberry, and tart like a cranberry Size: They are larger than an average blueberry, weighing around 2.6 grams on average. Health Benefits: Haskap berries are known to be rich in antioxidants, and are also a good source of vitamins and minerals.
Cultivation: Haskaps are relatively easy to grow, are cold-hardy, and don't require much pruning or fertilizers. They are typically ready for harvest in late June to early July.
Uses: Haskap berries can be eaten fresh, used in various recipes (like jams, syrups, and baked goods), or added to smoothies. Look for dark purple/dark blue to harvest.

We even have a few of the plants still available at the garden center.

There's some more cherry tomato plants, more kale

Lots of Pullet eggs we have 30 new hens that have just started laying. Often called "pullets". When they first start laying they have perfect small eggs for the first number of weeks. So you'll see them on the order form with the price point of $6/dozen.

This week: Red Frilly Kale and lots of Rhubarb
There's, asparagus, less greens but some salad mix bags, fresh herbs, and farm fresh eggs.
The red kale is delicious, soft and easy to use in salads, stir fry, soup, quiche and more.

Reminder

We are not planning to open the Market Stand this season for a number of reasons. Our plan is to transition to a more interactive approach where we will not only offer online ordering but also facilitated U-Pick opportunities starting in July. Stay tuned!

We will continue offering the weekly order form option as the way to what's available from the greenhouse, outdoors and of course the hens. Thank You for supporting small scale growing and community.
