Farm Blog - Jolly July, Community market

Hello from the gardens, I hope you have had some time to enjoy this beautiful country that we live in and are settling into July. May we all find time to be outside soaking up the sunshine, the summer breezes and beauty all around us.

Finally feels like we are getting caught up on planting and these temperatures with some rain sprinkled in should make everything pop. That being said with the plants going in late and potentially feeling stressed they often have flowers and fruit starting to set on the plant.

It can feel hard to do but removing any flowers or fruit makes it so much easier for the plant to focus on getting roots established. Even once the plant is in the ground we will keep removing any flowers until the plant starts to get to the more mature size and looking lush and healthy. Definitely some short term pain for long term gain!

Last week for asparagus, it's time to let the spears come up and turn into asparagus ferns. For the rest of the season the ferns will soak up the sunshine and put lots of energy back into the roots for next spring.

Speaking of,
Haskaps are almost complete and there's fewer cedar waxwings hanging out. The sour cherry shrubs are setting up nicely and should be ready in 3 weeks or so.

Reminder

We are not planning to open the Market Stand this season for a number of reasons. Our plan is to transition to a more interactive approach where we will not only offer online ordering but also facilitated U-Pick opportunities starting in July. Stay tuned!

We will continue offering the weekly order form option as the way to what's available from the greenhouse, outdoors and of course the hens. Thank You for supporting small scale growing and community.
