Farm Blog - Summer Time, market Order form, events

Happy July, Well how's this been for some interesting weather. I hope everyone is fairing well between the heat and storms.

With all the heat and some moisture mixed in everything seems to be growing overnight. It would be helpful if the days were a little less intense so we could get all the work done but lots of trust that it will all come to be.

The cherry shrubs are loaded with tart delicious sour cherries. I made a rhubarb crisp and included some of the cherries. I see why the sour cherries are touted as best for baking. Yum! This is an exerp from naturehills.com/blogs/garden-blog/the-power-of-the-sour-cherry

"The tremendous health value of Sour Cherries has been realized as far back as 3000 BCE. Only today are we able to define what that really means. In more recent studies, the term "super fruit" has become associated with the Sour Cherry. This is due to the high antioxidant values the Sour Cherry possesses. It has been shown in studies to have high anti-inflammatory benefits, improve memory, lower the risk of heart disease and colon cancer, and has even been cited as contributing to a good night's sleep".

The zucchini have started producing, there's traditional green, yellow and even a striped green one called tiger baby. There's really no difference other than the colour of the skin!

Kohlrabi is possibly a new vegetable for you, here's some info from www.lakewinds.coop/blog/what-is-kohlrabi
"Kohlrabi is crunchy with a delicate pepper zing similar to turnips, yet it's also mild and slightly sweet like cabbage. Kohlrabi translates to "cabbage turnip" from German, a perfect translation when you think about what kohlrabi tastes like!

Uses for kohlrabi
Kohlrabi is a low-calorie, versatile ingredient, making it a great addition to a wide variety of meals. Wash and peel it before using and enjoy it raw or cooked. The stems and leaves are edible and can be used as a substitute for collards, kale, and more."

Kohl-slaw
2 cups kohlrabi, shredded or sliced into matchsticks

1 cup carrots, shredded or sliced into matchsticks

2 green onions, sliced

1 Tablespoon olive oil

½ Tablespoon apple cider vinegar

½ Tablespoon lemon juice

½ teaspoon caraway

½ teaspoon fresh dill or dried caraway

Salt & pepper to taste

Add apple cider vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, and herbs together in a small bowl and whisk until combines. Salt and pepper to taste and set aside. Mix the sliced vegetables together in a bowl, stir in the dressing, and serve.

The Kale is sizing up an is available as mixed bags of curly green curly red and even some dinosaur coming along. There's a lovely crop of young lambsquarters so it back on the available list.

Feeling like this is the last week for Rhubarb and Garlic scapes. We may start pulling some garlic next week or at latest the week after. It's important to cure it if wanted for storage but I'm just excited to have some fresh garlic (I call it green garlic) it's a bit juicier and not quite as strong before it cures.

We have lots of eggs so there's now up to 4 that you can order at a time.
