Farm Blog - So much Delicious food, Order form, August ends

Happy August, well the end of August and getting ready for September! Tom and I had a chance to get away and had lots of fun at the Owen Sound Folk Festival. So many talented people in a beautiful setting. What a joy to experience..... even with lots of rain off and on!

There's so much ripening and getting ready in the garden. New this week is Fairy watermelons, red radish, salad mix, spicy salad mix, cherry tomatoes, tomatillos, ground cherries and sweet peppers.
The garlic is nicely cured and ready for eating, storage and seed. There's more options on the order form and larger quantities will be available as we get it cleaned up.

Tomatillos and Ground Cherries are both cousins of the tomato plant. They both grow in a lantern like husk but that's where the similarities end. Tomatillos are best know for making Salsa Verde (they are a round green looking tomato that is full of pectin). With the thickening of the pectin they are great for making salsa!
Ground cherries are a yellow, sweet berry that comes wrapped in their own little lantern. They are a super sweet treat and as the name indicates are ready when they drop to the ground.
The Fairy watermelons are a yellow skinned, pink fleshed small variety of watermelon.

This is the time of garden abundance and a great time to eat what you can, freeze, can or dry what you can.

Beans and cucumbers as well as Rainbow Chard and Kale are in abundance this week.

Kale and Chard are on sale for $3.50/200g bunch. So great to freeze some for the winter and I love the chard stalks as celery.

There's new round green beans, then the tasty Roma flat green beans and a lovely round yellow pole bean ready.
Each size $1 off if you've ever picked bush beans you understand the gift here

Then there's cucumbers, with so many different types. The pickling cucumbers, field cucumbers, white martini cucumbers, english cucumbers and middle eastern (like a half size english).
Half price for every type except pickling

What a delicious time of year.
A sweet treat is that there's a fresh harvest of honey. Now available 330g jar - $10, 500g jar - 13 and 1kg jar - $25

The delicious fruit has returned this year from Palentines orchard who choose to grow as naturally as possible.
- use beneficial insects
- focus on soil health
- no or low spray
- pick as close to ripe as possible
- do not use a bleach bath
Bottom line they grow really delicious fruit!

New this week: White Lady peaches (freestone and super sweet) as well as Black Amber plums (similar to the taste of yellow plums)
There's still some Galaxy peaches available this week as well as Nectarines.

If you are looking for larger quantities, the peaches can be preordered in 25lb boxes.
Let me know at least a week ahead.
