Farm Blog - Market Message, this Week apples & Pears

Happy September, Lots of crops finishing up and some just hitting their stride. Always a treat to make it to slicing tomatoes and apple days.

The beans and cucumbers have really slowed down and many have almost finished. Hard to believe a couple of weeks ago it was feeling impossible to keep up with the picking.

Happily the cool season crops are happy so I've added Spicy Mustard and a mild green mustard called Fun Jen to the order form. We have a good supply of red and green romaine growing. We keep picking the outside leaves and it keeps on producing. Also loving the cool there's lovely Diakon radish and baby cabbages. These cabbages are from the same plants as our first crop where we cut the head high on the stock and voila the plant does it's best to produce more, they're just more the size of a baseball.

We even tested our first Sweet Potato Squash (or Delicatta squash) last night. Feels like we can start picking next week.
Super excited for a new to me winter squash called Stripetti, it's a natural cross between a spaghetti squash and a delicatta. What sold me was the description that it comes apart like a spaghetti squash but is sweeter and a bit nutty. Probably a couple of weeks away yet to start picking.

This is the time of garden abundance and a great time to eat what you can, freeze, can or dry what you can.

Rainbow Chard and Kale are in abundance this week.

Kale and Chard are on sale for $3.50/200g bunch. So great to freeze some for the winter and I love the chard stalks as celery.

- Field cucumbers are still on sale this week!

What a delicious time of year.
A sweet treat is that there's a fresh harvest of honey. Now available 330g jar - $10, 500g jar - 13 and 1kg jar - $25

We are fortunate to get Organic, Local Apples and Pears from an organic vineyard outside of Creemore.
This week we have the first of the Macintosh apples as well as a Asian Pear Apple.
For pears we have Bartlet and Anjou.

Many more delicious varieties ahead. The apples are mostly smaller this year as so much fruit set on the trees. The coming cooler nights add even more sweetness to the fruit.
