Happy July, I'm not sure the saying "the hazy days of summer" meant smoke filled orange days, but that's what came to mind. Got to say even with the smoke in the air the cooler temperature has been a welcome change. Working outside is sometimes the greatest joy and others the greatest challenge.
Between the heat, moisture and birds the sour cherries are pretty much finished up for the season. The black caps are here but really only enough for snacking on. Not sure about the Black berries this year, I'm not seeing allot of blooms but boy do the fruit trees seem to be loaded this year. Tasty times ahead!
Speaking of tasty, there's so many beans sizing up. We have climbing beans in the greenhouse, green, yellow and purple that are busy climbing towards the top of the greenhouse and should be starting in the next couple of weeks and then there's the bush beans in the field with a tasty crop of broad roma beans setting (maybe even starting next week) and then another variety of bush yellow just getting ready to bloom.
The zucchini have really sized up. With so many varieties and sizes you can choose which one(s) you would like, there's traditional green, yellow and even a striped green one called tiger baby. There's really no difference other than the colour of the skin!
leaving this on for this week, in case you missed it!
Kohlrabi is possibly a new vegetable for you, here's some info from www.lakewinds.coop/blog/what-is-kohlrabi
"Kohlrabi is crunchy with a delicate pepper zing similar to turnips, yet it's also mild and slightly sweet like cabbage. Kohlrabi translates to "cabbage turnip" from German, a perfect translation when you think about what kohlrabi tastes like!
Uses for kohlrabi
Kohlrabi is a low-calorie, versatile ingredient, making it a great addition to a wide variety of meals. Wash and peel it before using and enjoy it raw or cooked. The stems and leaves are edible and can be used as a substitute for collards, kale, and more."
Kohl-slaw
2 cups kohlrabi, shredded or sliced into matchsticks
1 cup carrots, shredded or sliced into matchsticks
2 green onions, sliced
1 Tablespoon olive oil
½ Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
½ Tablespoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon caraway
½ teaspoon fresh dill or dried caraway
Salt & pepper to taste
Add apple cider vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, and herbs together in a small bowl and whisk until combines. Salt and pepper to taste and set aside. Mix the sliced vegetables together in a bowl, stir in the dressing, and serve.
